#10 A New Hope

  The Star Wars franchise holds a very special place in my heart. One of my earliest memories is seeing Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in theaters with my grandpa at the tender age of two. I was captivated by each installment I watched in the franchise in the following years. While in today's age of CGI, AI-augmented reality, skillful editing, and VFX software, the practical and computer-generated effects used in 1974 may seem cheesy or corny compared to Avatar or The Lord of The Rings. It's important to note that without Star Wars, George Lucas, and Lucasfilm, many of the techniques used in these future films may not have been discovered or implemented. Star Wars was a significant turning point for special effects and the science fiction genre through cutting-edge special effects, incredible fictional world-building, and revolutionary sound design.

       In the special effects (SFX) world, history is divided into the time before and after Star Wars. George Lucas's company Industrial Light and Magic created and pioneered new techniques for crafting space battles that felt realistic, alien creatures that felt all too real, and futuristic environments that were wholly believable. Before innovating in CGI, the company mastered traditional visual effects techniques like matte painting, blue screen photography, and heavy use of models and miniatures. Star Wars created a foundation for Lucasfilm to go on to innovate on films such as Jurassic Park, Terminator, and Indiana Jones.

       For Star Wars, these uses of special and visual effects lay the groundwork for some of the most impressive world-building seen in cinema. Crafting an entirely new universe of characters and making audiences root or hate them is hard. Star Wars does it with precision, depth, and imagination. Each planet we encounter is richly developed with entire alien species, ecosystems, societal structures, and technology. Despite being entirely created on fiction, George Lucas imbues these worlds with tangible means for us to connect to the human qualities of these alien lifeforms.

       Many of us can distinctly pinpoint the sound of a lightsaber or a blaster being fired off. These sounds were expertly composed to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. The backdrop to the sonic landscape of Star Wars is John Williams' timeless orchestral score. The score manifests an environment of grandeur and epicness that enhances the overall storytelling of the film. Star Wars is a science fiction space opera of sorts, and we need John Williams's score and the distinctly alien sound effects to be engrossed in the story as easily as we are with them.

Beyond the innovations in SFX, sound design, and world-building, it is impossible to divorce Star Wars' accomplishments in the technical field from its lasting cultural impact. Star Wars' employment of groundbreaking techniques paved the way for numerous spin-offs, parodies, and sequels, which have had a lasting effect on today's popular culture.
